EAST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer was shot and wounded in East Orange during a confrontation with a suspect.

The officer's wounds are not considered life-threatening. Authorities say the officer's bullet-proof vest apparently spared him from more serious injuries.

The officer, whose name was not disclosed, was being treated at a hospital and was listed in good condition.

The shooting occurred late Wednesday morning in the area of North Oraton Parkway and New Street, but further details were not immediately disclosed.

The suspect who allegedly shot the officer has been taken in to custody.
