Political discourse these days centers around one of the handful of labels we all use to identify ourselves and our adversaries. Well yesterday on the show we got a random call from a very sweet, very youthful sounding and very vibrant 77-year-old woman who called just to tell us how much she loves our show. (By the way I love that we get 18 and 25 and 35 and 50 year-olds that enjoy what we do)
The mayor of my town of Medford New Jersey resigned Monday amidst a sex scandal and a shaky financial situation that has tarnished the towns image as of late. Well, this past Saturday night the town held its annual "Dickens Festival" complete with carolers and characters in 18th century garb and a live nativity scene off Main St.
I know for a lot of us watching something online is tedious if it's more than 3 or 4 minutes, but you HAVE TO take just less than half an hour and watch this video. It re-enforces what I know and believe about the United States of America, but we all take for granted how special this country really is AND how terribly close we are to losing it, perhaps forever.
Today we touched on a story about perks of certain jobs and how the state is trying to rein in cash payouts for accrued sick time. Something that just doesn't happen in the private sector and doesn't even happen that often in public employment outside of NEW JERSEY.
Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday with a wide range of traditions attached to its celebration. There are a ton of high school and college football games played and watched in person or on tv along with a couple of NFL games.
Yesterday I paid a landscaper a pretty penny to blow all of my leaves to the curb for the usual second pick up of the season, only to find out they will not be picked up. My next door neighbor called and the official answer he got is...."the town is broke."
I saw this scene from the movie "Back To School" with Rodney Dangerfield and it kind of reminded me of what's going on in our country right now. The "Super Committee" the President appointed to fix the massive debt problem we have in this county pretty much just threw up their hands this week because they can't come to any agreement.
We tried to "discuss" the Occupy Wall Street protests yesterday on the air and it devolved pretty quickly into name calling and yelling. Normally my "guinea blood" has a low boiling point when it comes to this kind of stuff, but I tried really hard to keep focused on "discussing" the issue.
