The Department of Defense announced Friday that Gollnitz was one of two soldiers killed in the attack in Pul-E Alam, Afghanistan.  According to the department’s statement,  the two were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Buffalo TV station WKBW   says the 28 year old trooper is survived by his wife and four year old son who live in Washington State.

The DOD listed Gollnitz’s hometown as Lakehurst, but family members say he is from Fredonia, N.Y.

The Asbury Park Press reports  Gollnitz was once stationed at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, now Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Army more than three years ago.

Gollnitz enlisted in the Navy right out of high school.  Six years later, he signed up for the Army and served two six-month tours in Iraq before he was sent off for his first deployment in Afghanistan.
