After dump truck starts rolling away, NJ driver killed trying to run after it

WEST AMWELL — A man was crushed to death by a dump truck at a Hunterdon County work site on Friday.

Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III said Walter DeGroff, 47, of Berlin Township, was killed when his dump truck rolled over him on private property in West Amwell around 10:40 a.m.

"The investigation revealed that the truck began to roll down a hill through a field and Mr. DeGroff ran after it in an attempt to catch it and stop it," Kearns said. "He slipped and the truck ran him over. Our sympathies are with his family.”

West Amwell Police did not return a message seeking further detail.
