NORTHFIELD — A 91-year-old woman fought back against a neighbor who broke into her South Jersey home just after midnight, police said.

Police said Michael S. Flaherty, 35, of Northfield, struggled with the woman as she tried to call 911. The tussle caused her to get several cuts.

Flaherty got into the home by prying open the back door of her home on Wabash Avenue and was confronted by the senior who recognized him, according to police. Police said Flaherty also dropped his phone in her home.

Police said Flaherty stole cash from her purse and ran off to his own home, where he was found hiding. He was also injured as he resisted arrest, according to police.

He is currently being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
