The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Jersey Transit's Bergenline station on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line.

NJ Transit emergency services units responded along with Union City police and North Hudson Fire and Rescue workers.

After technicians couldn't restart the elevator and lower it manually, an NJ Transit officer took an adjacent car down and transferred the passengers with a harness through the back panel of the car. They were freed at about 1:40 p.m.

An NJ Transit spokeswoman says the Bergenline station will be closed until repairs are completed. Buses will be used in place of trains until then fire
