A 40-year-old New Jersey man is one of two people dead in what Alabama authorities are calling a murder-suicide — and an 11-year-old remains hospitalized after being shot in the head.

Investigators say Lashonda Smith, 32, of Decatur, Al. shot 40-year-old Kareem Robinson of New Jersey and the child before turning the gun on herself early Tuesday monrning, according to a report on WAFF.com. Police were alerted to the incident when the 11-year-old called 911, according to the report.

Family members said Smith was Robinson's ex-girlfriend, according to the report. Smith had also apparently left behind a suicide note, it said.

Robinson's hometown was not listed in reports out of Alabama. New Jersey 101.5 is attempting to reach law enforcement authorities for more information.
