Police say officers had been responding to a domestic disturbance at the Jefferson on the Creek complex in Warminster shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday. They say a man inside an apartment fired multiple shots at police and barricaded himself inside.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as 49-year-old Andrew Cairns, surrendered around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, after about a six-hour standoff. Police say the elderly woman was apparently caught in the crossfire, but it wasn't clear who shot her.

Dozens of people in apartments nearby were evacuated during the incident. Police say Cairns is charged with aggravated assault; it wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.
