Watchung Mayor Gerald "Jerry" Mobus has died of an apparent heart attack.

The 70-year-old collapsed after speaking at the Watchung Hills boys basketball awards luncheon on Sunday. Mobus was the public address announcer for the basketball and baseball teams according to the Courier News.

Republican municipal chairman Doyle Hunsinger tells the Courier News a physician and police arrived within minutes. The mayor was pronounced dead at Overlook Hospital in Summit. The Borough posted a message on its Facebook page.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our Mayor, the honorable Gerald Mobus. Words cannot express the sadness felt within the Borough family. We'll miss you, Jerry.

Mobus was elected mayor in 2010 after serving several terms as a councilman. He also was a volunteer firefighter for over 40 years.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
