PENNS GROVE — An attempted traffic stop on Thursday night became a much bigger problem when the driver of a car instead chose to flee — then escape on foot before surrendering later that night.

Police said the driver, 21-year-old Penns Grove resident Anthony S. Montalvo, was seen driving erratically and did not stop at a stop sign before speeding up when he saw police in the area. Montalvo then continued to drive faster and ran three more stop signs before losing control after hitting a dip in the road, police said.

Montalvo's vehicle came to a stop after hitting the steps of a house before he escaped on foot, police said.

Police said he left two children and two adults in the car who were "dazed and injured."

One of the children was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Later that night, police said, Montalvo surrendered after officers received additional tips from the public and a search warrant revealed DNA evidence, drugs, and identification for Montalvo, identifying him as the suspect.

He was charged with eluding police, aggravated assault by auto, criminal mischief to property, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a minor, possession of marijuana, as well as other traffic violations.

Montalvo was held on a warrant at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
