New Jersey is one of only two states where it’s illegal to pump your own gas. This dates back to 1949 when the New Jersey Legislature passed the Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act, primarily over concerns about the safety of consumers pumping petroleum themselves.  Although other states which followed suit, eventually overturned their self-serve bans. New Jersey's law lives on.
