A new report shows identity theft in America increased 3 percent last year. Even more ominous is the way many thieves are evolving, moving away from just stealing credit account numbers.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities say two Sayreville residents took part in a credit card and identity theft ring that potentially netted thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities say a Georgia man and an Ohio woman stole the identities of at least two New Jersey residents and made fraudulent purchases totaling tens of thousands of dollars.

A bill aimed at preventing identity theft through digital copy machines used in banks, doctor's offices and other businesses is headed to the New Jersey Senate.
