An 11-year-old boy called 911 early Tuesday morning as the family's pit bull terrier attacked his parents in Paterson, NJ.com reports.

The first officer on the scene had to immediately shoot the dog, the report quotes Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale saying. The 38-year-old and 37-year-old parents had multiple bite wounds, the report states. Both were taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center, and the shaken-up officer was treated for trauma, Speziale reportedly said.

According to the report, it's not clear what caused the pit bull to attack.

Earlier this month, a 13-year-old girl and her grandmother were injured after two family dogs — a pit bull and a boxer — went after another family pet, and then the two people in South Brunswick.
