The driver of a car that careened into a concrete barrier on the Garden State Parkway faces drunk driving charges as the passenger remains in serious condition.

Crystal Summers, 43, of Orange will be charged with of driving while intoxicated pending further investigation, according to New Jersey State Police spokesman Lt. First Class Gregory Williams. Summers lost control of her Chevrolet Malibu on the southbound Parkway in Irvington

Passenger Heather Brown, 35, of Shrewsbury was ejected from the car and was struck by the car as it bounced across the highway into a concrete jersey barrier, according to police. Brown underwent emergency surgery at Univerisity Hospital in Newark.

The parkway was closed for several hours for clean up and an investigation for 5 hours early on Saturday morning.

The Essex County Prosecutor is investigating the incident along with New Jersey State Police.
