Officials say 500 weapons were collected in the first four hours of the program.

The guns-for-cash program got started yesterday and runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at churches in Irvington, Montclair, Orange, East Orange and two locations in Newark.

Weapons are exchanged for up to $250.

The program will follow similar guidelines as recent ones in Trenton and Camden, where more than 3,000 weapons were collected.

Officials say they have allotted several hundred thousand dollars and do not expect to run out of money like they have in the past.

The program is funded by state and county criminal forfeiture funds.
