The new year will bring something that's become old hat for New Jersey residents: more costs associated with driving. For the second time in three years, toll rates will rise on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. The latest increases go into effect on New Year's Day.

Tolls will rise an average of about 50 percent on both roads.

That means people driving the length of turnpike will pay $13.85 instead of $9.05 one-way. The additional revenue is to be used to fund road and bridge improvements.

The rate increase come just four months after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey jacked up tolls on bridges and tunnels into New York by 50 percent.
