NEWARK — Authorities say a city man shot himself while on the New Jersey Turnpike and then lied to police that he had been shot during a struggle with a man on a street.

Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said that 49-year-old Darron Shivers was charged with making a false report after the Friday night incident.

Ambrose says Shivers told police at the hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries that he was shot after a struggle with an unknown assailant.

But Ambrose says an investigation determined that Shivers had shot himself while in his car.

It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney to comment on his behalf.
