Lawsuit Filed Over Raritan Bay Superfund Site

A company blamed for lead pollution at a site along the Raritan Bay says in a lawsuit it is being unfairly targeted and that others should share the cost of the cleanup.

NL Industries filed the suit in federal court in New Jersey Wednesday. Last week, the federal Environmental Protection Agency and Rep. Frank Pallone announced finalized plans for a $79 million cleanup of the site, known as the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund site.

The lawsuit names the state, Old Bridge Township and the Army Corps of Engineers along with numerous companies that operated in the area. It alleges that Old Bridge allowed a seawall to be built that contained contaminants.

State and local officials didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.
