The suspects -- four Newark men and an East Orange man -- are due to appear Wednesday afternoon in U.S. District Court. The charges they face range from theft of a motor vehicle by force to weapons offenses to violence and intimidation.

All five face lengthy prison sentenced if convicted.

The case is part of an ongoing joint anti-carjacking initiative involving investigators and prosecutors at the federal, state and local levels. The U.S. Attorney's Office works with the agencies to select cases appropriate to adopt from the state for federal prosecution.

Federal charges typically carry longer potential prison terms and there is no parole in the federal system.
