Police chief Joseph Falbourne told NJ.com that the unidentified boy, who was new to the Grant Elementary School, jumped "of his own accord" after his opponent refused to say "checkmate" at the end of their match. A lunch room aide recalls hearing him asking, "Do you want me to do something drastic?" before writing a note and handing to his opponent with instructions not to open it before he got to the cafeteria.

The lunch aide told police she took the note but did not read it. She then saw the boy climbing up onto a shelving unit and leap out of the second-floor cafeteria window, 25 feet to his death on the pavement below, according to NorthJersey.com. The report did not disclose the contents of the note.

The website reports classmates told police that the boy talked about jumping out a window prior to the early March incident and often seemed angry.

Neither the boy's parents, nor the school had any comment on the report, NJ.com reported.
