CVS is recalling cases of Gold Emblem Abound Organic Spiced Herbal Tea following a notification from the manufacturer that it's potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

According to the FDA, an ingredient produced by the manufacturer’s raw material supplier tested positive for Salmonella in another company’s product. Gold Emblem tea uses the same ingredient.

The potentially affected and recalled packages are labeled “Gold Emblem Abound Organic Spiced Herbal Tea 1.41 oz” and come in 1.4 oz cartons. They have a best-by date of March 18 2018, and a UPC code of 0 50428 541043.

No other best by dates are affected.

The product was available at CVS Pharmacy stores nationwide. CVS has several hundred locations in New Jersey.

About 200 units of the recalled product were sold before the recall was issued, the FDA said. There have be no reported cases of illness tied to it as of yet.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. According to the FDA, even healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis, the FDA said.
