Christie signs bill Liberty State park project bill

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Gov. Chris Christie has signed a bill aimed at easing concerns that a new development authority could greenlight commercial projects at Liberty State Park.

Christie signed the bill on Monday. His action represents the fulfillment of a promise he and the Democratic-led Legislature made after the bill creating the consolidated New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority earlier this year.

The new law clarifies that the authority may only develop plans regarding Liberty State Park at the request of the New Jersey Environmental Protection commissioner.

But some environmental groups say this new law does not go far enough and may still result in commercial projects at the park overlooking the Statue of Liberty.

The Christie administration has said there are no such plans being considered.
