A social media campaign is underway to preserve a dinosaur replica in Bayville, which once marked the halfway point between Atlantic City and New York.

The landmark dinosaur sits in front of a now defunct store on Route 9 in Berkeley Township and has been there for more than 80 years since a taxidermist bought the 12-foot brontosaurus to advertise his business. His original location was a Sinclair gas station in Freehold according to the Berkeley Patch.

The Asbury Park Pressreports tentative plans call for moving the dinosaur down Route 9 to the Berkeley Township Historical Society. The landmark was named "Virginia" by children during a contest, according to Mayor Carmen Amato. He told the Asbury Park Press he plans to contact the property owner, Acquired Capital of Texas, to see if it is willing to sell or donate the landmark.

A recent picture of the dinosaur posted by the Berkeley Patch shows it with a deep cut on its neck

The Berkeley Township Citizens Group has more than 600 Facebook members but is a closed group which means that anyone wishing to join the group must be approved by the administrator.
