Banks Waive Fees For Sandy-Affected Customers

Banks have temporarily waived a variety of fees and late charges for residents of states hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, easing pressure on customers to make bill payments when many remain without power.

The shelving of fees comes with banks moving Wednesday to reopen thousands of branches and ATMs that had been shut down due to storm damage, power outages or inaccessibility.

Among the big banks setting aside key fees in affected areas because of the storm are Chase, Citi, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and PNC.

Fees being waived until early November include those for overdraft protection, insufficient funds, late payments on credit cards and loans, and early withdrawal on certificates of deposit for recovery use.
