Gone are the days when all you had to do to prepare for a school dance was buy a dress and wear it. Schools across the United States are cracking down on what students are allowed to wear to school functions, and it has parents and students up in arms.

The latest example is out of Wisconsin, where the Pewaukee School District is requiring students to submit photos of their attire before attending school dances like homecoming and prom. The policy has been in place since 2015, but it recently made headlines again after the school sent out a reminder.

According to a report by USA Today, the policy was implemented to avoid having to reject students from school functions for wearing attire that reveals too much skin.

And while the policy addresses both boys and girls, students and parents alike are calling the policy sexist. And they might have a point.

Pewaukee School District Superintendent Mike Caty admitted to USA Today that the dress code policy was implemented because girls were pushing the envelope by showing up to dances in inappropriate outfits. "We don't want anyone to show up and have to be sent home because of a dress-code violation," Caty told USA Today.

And while the school's intentions might be good, should students really be required to submit photos of their outfits to the school just so someone can say "pass" or "fail?"

In this Forever 39 podcast we discuss whether some school dress code policies are overreaching, and making decisions for students that ultimately should be left to the parents. If the school has done it's part to explain what the dress code is, why not just leave it at that and let the parent decide what's appropriate or not.
