May-December romances are all the rage in Hollywood, but how common are they in real life? Based on the latest information from the U.S. Census Bureau, May-December romances only account for a small percentage of marriages in the U.S.

Older Husbands

  • 4.8 percent of U.S. marriages involves a man 10 to 14 years older than his wife;
  • 1.6 percent of U.S. marriages involves a man 15 to 19 years older than his wife;
  • 1 percent of U.S. marriages involves a man at least 20 years older than his wife;

Older Wives

  • 1 percent of U.S marriages involves a woman 10 and 14 years older than her husband;
  • 0.3 percent of U.S. marriages involves a woman 15 and 19 years older than her husband;
  • 0.4 percent of U.S. marriages involves a woman 20 years or older than her husband.

As you can see from the above statistics, older men with younger wives is much more common than older women with younger husbands, although we do think that's becoming slightly more common these days.

So is age an issue for you? Do you care how much older or younger your significant other is? Would you marry someone 20 years older or younger than you?
