An 18-year-old student from Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville was struck and killed by a NJ Transit maintenance train late Sunday night.

New Jersey Transit spokesman Jim Smith said Jacob J. St. Phard was struck by the train, headed from the Meadowlands maintenance center in Kearny to the NJ Transit yard in Morrisville, Penn. around 8:20 p.m., west of the Hamilton station The incident caused a 90-minute delay on the Northeast Corridor. A crew of three was on board the train but no one besides St. Phard was hurt.

Smith said it is not known why St. Phard was on the tracks.

NJ Advance Media reports St. Phard, who went by the nickname Coby, was a senior who recently signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.

The school posted a message mourning "the loss of a member of the class of 2016" but did not identify the student. The message said counselors, campus ministers and faculty are helping students cope and that a special Mass will be held at 1 p.m. A call to the school has not yet been returned.
