Give credit to a 92 year old guy from Phillipsburg - whose campaign started back in 1960 - to lobby for his composition entitled “I’m from New Jersey” as our official state song.

We don’t have one – although there’ve been plenty of suggestions made over the years.

Bruce’s “Born to Run” being one of them, although while not expressing love for the state, still embodies the artistry of the composer who’s probably most identified with being from here.

Then there was Senator Ray Lesniak’s suggestion that Bon Jovi’s “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” be given that honor, saying that every time he hears it, it brings tears to his eyes.

The state’s issues go a lot deeper than what should be our official song. The possible collapse of Atlantic City, rising property taxes, red light cameras, and ever intrusive government all are front burner items that need to be addressed before Mascara’s plea.

But it would be nice if his song were accorded the honor of being the state’s official song – especially since the guy is 92, and God only knows how many years he has left.

While sounding dated in it’s original form – I’m sure it can be updated without taking away from the spirit that we’re proud to be citizens of the state.

Even if only in song.
