A new report out this week says there's a threat your children's safety that you may not have considered: the shopping cart. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and reported by Yahoo!, over 500,000 children were injured in shopping cart mishaps over a 21 year period.

I feel that number is a little misleading, however, because the number one category of shopping cart injury at 70.4% is "falling out of the cart", which I think is more a function of stupid parenting than of the shopping cart itself. That was followed by running into the cart, having the cart fall over, and getting a limb stuck in the cart. The overwhelming majority of the injuries involved the child's head (78%). With an average of 66 emergency room visits a day tied to shopping carts, the Center for Injury and Policy recommends that you put your child, especially babies, anywhere BUT the shopping cart.
