Yankees Sign Carlos Beltran, Kuroda Stays

The New York Yankees have lost two position players, landed an outfielder and kept a pitcher, all on Friday.

Second baseman Robinson Cano and outfielder Curtis Granderson are leaving the Bronx, Carlos Beltran is returning to New York and Hiroki Kuroda is staying put.

A person familiar with the negotiations says Cano has accepted a free-agent deal with the Seattle Mariners. ESPN reported earlier Friday that the contract was worth $240 million for 10 years. Cano has missed only 14 out of 1,120 games since the start of the 2007 season. He’s a career .309 hitter who has averaged 24 homers and 97 RBIs per 162-game season.

Cano’s bat has been replaced by Beltran. Two people familiar with the deal says the former Mets outfielder accepted a three-year, $45 million contract. The 36-year-old Beltran is an eight-time All-Star who hit .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs for the Cardinals this year and added two homers and 15 RBIs in the postseason.

Another member of this year’s Yankees is leaving as well, although he’ll be just a few miles from the Bronx. A person familiar with the situation says the New York Mets and free-agent outfielder Curtis Granderson have agreed to a four-year, $60 million contract.

Granderson missed much of last season due to wrist and hand injuries, batting .229 with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 61 games for the New York Yankees. But the three-time All-Star averaged 42 homers and 113 RBIs the previous two years in the Bronx, and led the American League with 119 ribbies in 2011.

The Yankees also said that pitcher Hiroki Kuroda (hih-ROH’-kee kuh-ROH’-duh) will be back for his third season with the team. The 38-year-old Kuroda got off to a strong start last season before fading down the stretch, finishing 11-13 with a 3.31 ERA in 32 starts covering 201 1/3 innings.
