Authorities say a worker at a Kearny industrial firm was killed when a piece of aluminum shot out of a machine and struck him.Kearny Police Sgt. John Taylor tells The Jersey Journal that township resident David Kornas died from injuries suffered in Friday afternoon's accident at the Hummel Machine and Tool Co.

Kornas had been operating a fabricating machine there when it made an unusual sound. When he turned the machine off, the aluminum shot out and struck him in the neck and head. He died a short time later at a hospital.

Co-workers say Kornas had been employed with the firm for many years and was well-liked.

The accident is under investigation by the U.S. Occupational and Safety and Health Administration
