FANWOOD — Authorities say a 26-year-old woman died after being electrocuted when she attempted to exit her vehicle after downed wires fell on top of the car during a storm Monday afternoon.

Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo told NJ Advance Media that the wires fell on the car at about 4:30 p.m. on Midway Avenue. The woman then attempted to exit the vehicle and was electrocuted by the live current, the article states.

The identity of the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has not been released pending notification of her family, police told NJ Advance Media.

Strong storms moved through the area, causing widespread power outages in some counties and knocking down trees and power lines. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for several New Jersey counties early in the afternoon, with the warnings expiring in most places around 8 p.m.
