Authorities responded to a report of smoke and flames coming from the single story dwelling on East Church Street at 12:34 a.m. It took about 30 minutes to extinguish.

Deputy Police Chief Michael Pigott tells the Asbury Park Press neighbors alerted two officers on the scene that someone was inside. Pigott says the officers were pushed back by the smoke and heat.

First Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni says the cause of the fire is accidental. Officials haven't ruled out whether a cigarette is to blame.
