If you didn't hear the hour we did on the beleaguered ice cream shop owner in Montclair who is coming under fire for a playful cartoon logo then you missed a lot of angry people. A landslide of callers supported Anthony Tortoriello. Only a week ago he opened up an ice cream parlor called Dairy Air (a play on the word derrière) and as a logo to go along with it is a cow with a blond wig and lipstick and a rather shapely woman-like behind.

Anthony ran this past a marketing panel that included women, along with friends and family (women included) and no one had a bad thought about this until Amy Tingle involved herself. Tingle runs an art store in the same town and she was udderly offended! Sorry, couldn't resist. She wrote a passionate letter telling poor Anthony how disgusting his clever marketing is and it made its way to social media where many more began attacking him.

“It is offensive and sickening. A hyper-sexualized, obviously female cow with her ass upended and poking through a circle, tail raised up, waiting for what? I’m not sure, but I do know that I am repulsed and offended. This kind of marketing scheme is the reason we currently have a sexual predator in the White House.”

Tingle's rant went on to say, “Because we have let ideas like this one pass with approval again and again and again. Because women (and men) have sat passively in marketing meetings and have not spoken up when ideas like this one are presented. Because no one spoke up in your marketing meeting and said, ‘This is wrong.’ This is offensive, not just to women, but to husbands and fathers and brothers and uncles and grandfathers who are trying to raise strong young women in a culture that continuously sexualizes them rather than treating them equally, with dignity and respect.”

Listeners responded with their own passion, fully in support of Anthony's playful marketing strategy. Some listeners even sent me an interesting link that I'd like to share. It's from The Creative Caravan's website, which is the store Amy Tingle owns. She's an artist, and this link shows a number of Original Collages by Amy Tingle for sale.

Take a look at "Butterfield, or How to Dust Your Crops". Gee, is that the legs, ass, and torso of a completely naked woman we see? Hmmm. Now scroll down to "Peep Show". A woman in black mesh lingerie? Right near that there's "Sexting", a turned on woman with her cleavage showing looking seductively at her phone.

Apparently these are all okay to sell and don't sexualize or objectify women, but a cartoon cow logo is not. Oh sure, she'll say it's different because it's 'art' and we being rubes aren't looking at the deeper meaning in her work; that she doesn't offer this art as an objectification of women and that her intent and meaning is something else. Well guess what Ms. Tingle, you hypocrite, the intent and meaning of Anthony's silly cow logo is something else to him. How about just stick to selling your pretentious art and leave other business people in town alone.
