We have an exclusive update this morning on a New Jersey teen who was paralyzed playing youth hockey.  You remember the story of Monroe's Mikey Nichols?  He broke his neck hitting the boards.  This morning we can tell you he is defying the odds.  Told he would never breathe on his own, Mikey is off the ventilator and moving his arms.  He spoke with our Steve Trevelise and had this advice for other paraplegics.

 

The Nichols family is now partnering with "the big idea," a campaign run by the Christopher & Dana Reeve foundation which seeks funding for a groundbreaking treatment for people with spinal cord injuries.

Did you see those window washers hanging on the side of the World Trade Center?  We have photos and video at NJ1015.com. Investigators are looking into the collapse of a scaffold that left the two dangling 68-stories above the street.  Firefighters used diamond cutters to saw through a double-layered window to pull them to safety.

A grisly find at a recycling facility in Farmingdale.  Workers found the remains of a female infant and bloody clothes nearby.  Police have very little else to go on but hope someone may recognize the clothing and given them a clue to the identity of the mother.

A horrific accident in Ocean Township.  Police say a drunk driver hit a pedestrian then kept going even though the guy he hit was lodged in his windshield.  33-year old Marcos Ortega remains jailed this morning.  His victim, a 61 year old man, is in critical condition.

An emergency manager, and shared services, are among the recommendations delivered to Governor Christie before the latest summit on the future of Atlantic City. Christie wouldn't offer a thumbs-up or down on any of the ideas, and another summit is planned for January. Christie says the current model in Atlantic City is remarkably unsustainable. As elected officials and business leaders search for ways to keep Atlantic City afloat, local residents have a lot of hope for their city. A comeback is possible…with the right approach.

Stockton College is buying the former showboat casino. And will use it as a satellite campus.  Details of the sale are not being revealed.

The Indian doctor who performed sterilization surgeries on 13 women who died is now under arrest. Authorities in Central India say Dr. R.K. Gupta performed more than 80 surgeries in just six hours on Saturday -- that's more than double what's legal in the country. Many of the women became ill after they were released from the hospital hours after the surgery. In addition to the women who died, at least 16 others are now fighting for their lives.

Terminally ill Jerseyans with a very short time to live are a step closer to having the choice to legally take their own lives with the help of a doctor. Today, the full assembly is scheduled to vote on the aid in dying for the terminally ill act.

Nineteen automakers accounting for most of the passenger cars and trucks sold in the U.S. have signed onto a set of principles they say will protect motorists' privacy.   They want to assure car buyers the information their cars stream back to automakers or that is downloaded from the vehicle's computers won't be handed over to authorities without a court order, and that it won't be sold to insurance companies or used to bombard them with ads.

 

With mounting "big brother" privacy concerns everywhere you look these days, a Jersey lawmaker wants to make it easier for authorities to get their hands on all outdoor video surveillance from any business or private residence in your community or anywhere in the garden state.

High school football teams may soon be limited in the amount of hitting they can do in practice.  The high school sports authority will move to limit contact to no more than 90-minutes per practice.  A rising number of injuries, .many in practice. Have sparked efforts to limit the amount of hitting teams can do prior to games.

A guy getting ready to board a frontier airlines flight from Trenton to Charlotte told police he forgot about the loaded 9-mm handgun in his carry-on.  It was picked up by the x-ray scanner and he was arrested.

Several number of jersey schools were swept for bombs on Wednesday.after separate threats were called in.  Police think it may have been a coordinated prank.  Schools were evacuated in Garfield, Hackensack, Englewood, Fort Lee, and Leonia.

The drowning of a 15-month old boy at a south jersey daycare center was an accident.  That from police this morning.  The woman watching him had gone inside to care for another child .and when she came back out, the boy was dead in a goldfish pond...

Has North Jersey got a case of Bieber fever?  We're hearing this morning that Justin Bieber is staying in Glenn Ridge and is on a religious retreat in Montclair.  Local residents have been tweeting Bieber sightings for days.

Open enrollment for health coverage under Obamacare begins Saturday, but you can start window shopping for a plan today. If you're not covered by February first you will have to take money out of your pocket anyway because you'll be fined.

Are you eating out as much as you used to? Many of us are not, which is making it tougher for many jersey restaurants to stay in business.

Members of congress from states where marijuana is legal are banding together to tell their colleagues on Capitol Hill not to interfere with state drug laws. The democrats from Colorado, Oregon and the District of Columbia will join Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of California at a news conference later this morning. They'll talk about the changing attitude about pot, and tell the rest of congress how it should -- or shouldn't -- weigh in on state drug policy.
