The window washers became trapped when their scaffold near the top of the 46-story Hearst Building at 57th Street and Eighth Avenue folded in the middle according to WNBC TV.

The rescue operation took about 90 minutes to complete. The scaffold is still outside the building.

The scaffold uses new technology that creates a "V" in the middle. The problem was that the scaffold would not lock in place.

The FDNY determined the best way to get the workers off the scaffold was to remove glass from the building and pull the workers through according to WABC TV.

"The glass is heavy and we have to make sure it doesn't fall to the ground.,"Assistant Chief William Seelig told the station. They are using suction cups to secure the glass.
