Whole Foods customers hit by credit breach — 3 NJ locations affected
TRENTON — Whole Foods becomes the latest New Jersey retailer to warn its customers of a possible credit breach.
The chain said the breach affects only customers of its in-store restaurants and taprooms, which use a different point-of-sale system than the main store checkout.
Of the 17 Whole Food locations in New Jersey, three have restaurants.
The Clark location has a barbecue-themed restaurant called the Clark Bar. The Milburn location also has a barbecue restaurant, and the Metuchen store has a Mexican restaurant.
Whole Foods said it has launched an investigation, hired a cyber security forensics firm and contacted law enforcement.
The chain's payment systems do not connect to those of new owner Amazon.
A credit card breach was announced last week by Sonic Drive In involving 5 million credit and debit card numbers used at Sonic’s 3,600 locations nationwide. The numbers were then sold on the black market to be used fraudulently.
