New Jersey officials are urging residents to prepare for next week’s Frankenstorm by getting an emergency preparedness kit.

Diane Concannon of the American Red Cross says people in New Jersey need to think about an emergency preparedness kit, if they have not done so already.

She points out that these big storms, such as Irene last year, taught many of us that food and supplies will quickly disappear from stores shelves this weekend, so get together enough food and water to sustain you and your family for at least three days.

Concannon said, “You should try to do that now and get your emergency preparedness kits in place.”  Also make sure you have enough supplies for your pets and if you take prescriptions, make sure you can hold out with enough of those till the storm passes.

In its entirety, the Red Cross says your three-day kit should include:

· Water – one gallon per person, per day.

· Food – non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items such as tuna fish, peanut butter, crackers, and canned fruit. Make sure to include a manual can opener.

· A battery-powered or hand-crank radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries.

· A first aid kit.

· Prescription and non-prescription medication items. Include medical supplies like extra hearing aid batteries, syringes, etc.

· Copies of important documents, including birth certificates, insurance policies and social security cards.

· Sanitation and personal hygiene items.

· Extra cash. ATMs and credit cards won’t work if the power is out.

· Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members.

· One blanket or sleeping bag per person.

· Pet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowls).
