What if we filled the Supreme Court with Jersey guys and gals?
With the passing of Trenton native, Justice Antonin Scalia, the Supreme Court vacancy is a big deal right now. The president already is working on a shortlist of possible replacements, so why not refocus on New Jersey?
No, not *real* politicians or lawyers or judges. They're boring. Let's think "outside the box" — waaaay outside — at some other celebs with Jersey roots.
Kevin Spacey
Given the South Orange native's role as Frank Underwood on Netflix series "House of Cards", he's got a sense of how Washington works. Maybe a little too much. Has a Supreme Court justice ever killed anyone?
Shaquille O'Neal
This would be the only bench the NBA pro ever sat. Wouldn't it be great if the Newark native could write a Supreme Court dissenting opinion with the opener, "Shaq attack" ?
Martha Stewart
The home guru from Nutley would bring so much to the table. If you thought Ruth Bader Ginsburg's robe accessorizing was quaint, Stewart would up that game considerably. (Those collars are called jabots, BTW.) She knows what the justice system is like from the other side, too.
Joe Jonas
The pop star who grew up in Bergen County could bring some whimsical style to the High Court. Wonder how long it would take before Justices Stephen Breyer or Clarence Thomas began sporting pink hair?
Zoe Saldana
The actress would be a bold choice as the first Justice with an inter-stellar background. (She's really a Passaic native.)
Theresa Giudice
The "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star offers valuable first-person insight into court cases involving, umm ... financial regulation.
Peter Dinklage
The Morristown native can command Shakespeare and lengthy "Game of Throne" scripts, with ease. He'd probably be able to take a crack at the legal jargon involved in each case.
Bruce Springsteen
The Boss as Judge — only if you’re ready for dissenting opinions that take three-hours to get through and involve Little Steven. And, a we--timed saxophone solo.
Come to think of it, Justice Samuel Alito was born in Trenton. Justices Ruth Bader-Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan were all born in New York City, while Chief Justice John Roberts is also a New York native (by way of Buffalo). We'll have to see if more "East Coast" is in store for SCOTUS.
Erin Vogt is a lifelong Jersey Girl, whose first reporting gig involved her Fisher Price tape recorder. As a wife and momma of two kiddies, she firmly believes that life’s too short to drink bad coffee. A fan of the beach, Dave Grohl and karma, in no particular order.
