HOLMDEL — Police say a car that hit a utility pole at the intersection of Route 34 and Deer Path on Friday morning did so because the driver suffered a drug overdose behind the wheel.

First-responders at the scene found the driver, 30-year-old Matthew Gianna of Tinton Falls, unconscious in his black Toyota, Holmdel police said. It was believed he suffered the overdose while driving south on Holmdel 34, police said.

Police said it appears Gianna crossed the center lane markings to the northbound side of the road before going "several hundred feet," off the road eventually hitting the pole.

The Holmdel First Aid Squad as well as MONOC paramedics responded to the scene of the crash, along with the Holmdel Fire Department. At that time Gianna was treated with NARCAN for the potential overdose. He regained consciousness at the scene and was taken to Bayshore Community Hospital.

The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Ptl. Matthew Menosky at 732-946-2820 ext. 1879.
