The demolition of an overpass on Route 280 will cause delays all weekend in both directions in Newark.

Two lanes are closed in each direction between Exit 15 for Route 21 and Exit 16 for Cleveland Avenue as the westbound Route 280 bridge over Martin Luther King Boulevard in Newark is torn down. All traffic will be shifted to the eastbound bridge leaving only one lane in each direction according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The DOT said a new westbound bridge will be in place by Monday morning at 6 a.m.

In addition, the Exit 14 Ramp from I-280 eastbound to Martin Luther King Boulevard will be closed during construction. MLK Boulevard from State Street to Orange Street will be closed and detoured as well.

Delays formed on Saturday morning as drivers encountered the closure on the interstate that runs between Parsippany and the New Jersey Turnpike.

The project is part of the DOT's project to improve the Route 280 and Route 21 interchange that began last September. The eastbound bridge will be demolished before the end of summer setting up a similar lane availability according to the DOT.
