‘Waves Of Hope’ For Sandy Victims [AUDIO]

It’s been a tough road for some of the hardest hit victims of Sandy.

While the wind and waves ceased on October 30, 2012, the impact has been felt every day since for those trying to pick up the pieces of their lives.

Unfortunately, many are turning to drugs and alcohol to get by. The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey is reaching out and offering help to those in need with the launching of the “Waves of Hope” campaign.

“We are providing a comprehensive list of all the free services that are available to residents who were affected by Sandy who are looking for emotional support, help with post traumatic stress disorder, support for substance abuse issues and support with their overall mental health,” said Angelo Valente, executive director of Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey. “The idea is to help people find out exactly where need to go in their communities to get that help.”

“The storm may be over, but many people are still suffering every day with loss, stress and lifestyle changes that can seem unbearable at times. There is certainly additional stress that families and individuals are going through during this difficult period. In some cases, people turn to self medication or alcohol abuse or other things to help alleviate the pain,” said Valente.

“We want residents to know that if they have a friend, neighbor or loved one who may need assistance, or if they need the assistance themselves, they should contact the different social service agencies and community groups that are involved in providing this type of counseling. It is available and they should take advantage.”

As part of the campaign, ads will be featured on PATH trains, ferries and billboards across the state for the remainder of the year. It directs residents to a listing of mental health and substance abuse prevention resources on the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey website.
