When I became Program Director of Express Traffic back in 1996, my friend James Tayoun, a former Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. whose show I had produced on Sunday mornings, gave me a great piece of advice, “Never say anything about anybody that you wouldn’t say into an open microphone.” Someone should have given that same advice to Bismark news anchor A.J. Clemente.

In radio, we have to be very conscious of the open microphone. Many times, from being so comfortable with you during the show, I catch myself from dropping a bad word. It’s like a reflex button that goes on in my head when I walk into the studio. I’m always been amazed by broadcasters who curse in the studio because you never know when there’s a mic on.

Like for instance when A.J. Clemente began his first anchoring gig in Bismarck North Dakota. ( home of the Racoon National Cemetery for you Honeymooners fans) Listen to the first words out of his mouth while the intro is being played, then watch how he and hos co-anchor try to recover. It’s must see TV!

And here is Clemente's co-anchor issuing a formal apology to the audience.
