WATCH: Man beaten, disowned by family after coming out as gay
Daniel Ashley Pierce is a 20-year-old man from Kennesaw, Georgia. He recently came out as gay to his parents. When the reaction didn’t go as well as he would have hoped, he began to record the situation on video with his smartphone. You can see the video below.
This video contains is NSFW and contains extremely graphic language and violence.
In the video, Pierce’s mother says, “since you have chosen that path, we will not support you any longer. You will need to move out and find wherever you can to live, and do what you want to. ‘Cause I will not let people believe that I condone what you do.” Pierce has since been thrown out of his home and a GoFundMe page was created by his boyfriend to help fund his living expenses. As I’m writing this post on Friday afternoon, over $75,000 has been raised in just one day.
You can see his plea below.
Daniel Pierce’s situation sucks. Plain and simple. Those horrible 5+ minutes caught on video illustrate the struggle that many people share in this country, due in large part because they are afraid of something similar, if not worse, happening to them.
I donated for two reasons. The first one being that anyone left with nothing in 2014, especially at 20 years old, could lead to a lifelong uphill battle against many vicious circumstances. The other reason is that I realized I’m very lucky. When I had a similar discussion with my family and friends, I was embraced with nothing but support. Seeing how much of a turn a life can take by simply breaking similar news to mine is incredibly eye opening and I would like to help make the phrase “It gets better” a reality for at least one person going through this struggle.
