NEW YORK (AP) -- For its last of eight shows at Madison Square Garden, U2 welcomed some very famous guests.

U2 performed for more than two hours, including such favorites as "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and "Beautiful Day." For their encore, Rolling Stone reports an extra microphone was set up on stage and Bono started talking about how Bruce Springsteen filled in for him after his bicycle accident in New York.

"Earlier, when I busted myself up here in the city, we had a gig in Times Square for Red and this man showed up and delivered," said Bono in his introduction for Sprinsteen, who joined them for "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and the Ben E. King hit "Stand By Me."

It’s not the first time Bono and the Boss performed these particular songs together. Bruce Springsteen afficinado Tom Cunningham, host of the Bruce Brunch on 105.7 The Hawk, remembers them doing "Stand By Me" together at Philadelphia's old JFK Stadium in 1987, their first time performing together.

Cunningham says it’s the third time they have done "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For." The first time was at the 2005 induction of U2 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and again in 2009 at the Hall’s 25th anniversary concert.

Earlier, Bono gave a shout out to former President Bill Clinton for helping to negotiate peace in the 1990s in the band's native Ireland. Bono later praised the former president and Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is running for president, for their efforts in fighting AIDS.

The New York shows were part of U2's "Innocence & Experience" tour.
