Our friends at Mental Floss have the brief story of how a New Jersey woman's 19th century grave has been preserved as suburban sprawl enveloped it, resulting in a parking lot for a cineplex being built around it.

To me, they buried the lead: the woman in question may have been the inspiration for an enduring Jersey anthem, "Brandy" by Looking Glass. The grave is in New Brunswick, Looking Glass formed in New Brunswick (at Rutgers); the woman in question fell in love with a sea captain who sailed away and she rode her horse to the river every day for years waiting for his return. He never came back. There is no mention of her being a waitress or of a locket, but I'd like to think the song was inspired by a real life Jersey woman.
