Warren done in by 1 mistake as Yankees lose 3-0 to Athletics

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- When Masahiro Tanaka returns to the New York Yankees' rotation this week, Adam Warren wants to make sure he's not the odd-man out.

Warren allowed just a two-run homer to Stephen Vogt in his fourth straight quality start but ended up on the losing end to Jesse Chavez in New York's 3-0 defeat to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

Tanaka, out since April 29 with right wrist tendinitis and forearm strain, is slated to pitch Wednesday in Seattle, meaning either Warren or Chris Capuano will likely be moved out of the rotation.

"It's hard for me to say but I feel like I've gone out there and competed and given the team a chance to win the vast majority of the time," Warren said. "I don't think I have any regrets with what I've done. I feel like I've gotten better and I'm pleased with that."

Warren (3-4) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings, matching the longest outing of his career. After failing to complete six innings in any of his first six starts this season, Warren has pitched into the seventh four straight times.

He has a 3.04 ERA in that span but just a 1-3 record to show for it after Vogt's homer broke open a scoreless game in the sixth inning.

"He made a mistake," manager Joe Girardi said. "He made one mistake and unfortunately it cost the game. I think we got a really good performance out of him. It's unfortunate we didn't score him any runs."

Chavez allowed seven hits and no walks, striking out six. He had his second straight start with no earned runs allowed in eight innings but got the win this time after losing 1-0 on an unearned run to Detroit on Tuesday.

"I was thinking to myself we have not scored any runs for this guy all year," Vogt said. We knew today all he needed was one run. That's the kind of day it was for him on the mound. To get him a couple of runs was huge. He was just some kind of awesome today."

Tyler Clippard got three outs for his seventh save in eight chances as the A's got their first series win at home since taking two of three from Philadelphia last Sept. 19-21.

It looked as if Chavez was in for another tough-luck game when Warren breezed through the first five innings. But that changed in the sixth when Billy Burns got things started with one of his three hits and then promptly stole second and third.

Warren got Ben Zobrist on a shallow fly that kept Burns at third base. Vogt left no doubt when he followed with a drive into the right-field seats for his 11th home run of the season.

"Just tried to jam him up and get weak contact," Warren said. "I felt like I made a decent pitch. He just put a good swing on it. I think the wind might have helped him."

Vogt added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, scoring Burns once again, to give the A's a 3-0 lead.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Yankees: INF Brendan Ryan, out all season with a right calf injury, began a rehab assignment at Class A Tampa. ... RHP Chris Martin (right elbow) was returned from a rehab assignment, reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and then optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Athletics: LHP Eric O'Flaherty (strained left shoulder) could be activated as soon as Tuesday after making a rehab appearance Saturday at Class A Stockton.

NOTABLE HITS

Ramon Flores singled in the second inning for his first career hit. Alex Rodriguez had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He is batting .417 over that span.

Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (6-2) will make his first start in Seattle since being traded by the Mariners to New York in January 2012. He takes on Seattle ace Felix Hernandez (8-1).

Athletics: Oakland has a day off before starting a three-game series in Detroit on Tuesday. Kendall Graveman (2-2), who left the team to attend to a family matter, is still scheduled to start against Alfredo Simon (5-2).
