The Assembly’s Labor Committee is expected to advance a measure Monday that would boost the minimum hourly wage employers are required to pay employees who make most of their money from tips.

The bill calls for two consecutive yearly increases. The first would bump the hourly wage to $2.90 per hour. The second increase, on July 1, 2013, would raise the rate to $5. Most employees who rely on tips are now paid the federal minimum wage for tipped workers of $2.13 per hour.

The Legislature is also considering a proposal to raise the minimum wage for all other workers from $7.25 per hour to $8.50.
