One day after turning himself in to police, a New Jersey man said he was ready to plead guilty to the killing 23 years ago of a teen whose death had been a mystery.

Forty-one-year-old Steven Goff of Ventnor told a judge Tuesday "I did the crime."

But the hearing was not to accept a plea, and the judge warned him anything he said could be used against him.

Goff showed up at the police station in Galloway early Monday. Within hours he was charged with murder in the 1990 death of 15-year-old Frederick Hart in woods behind a condo complex in Galloway.

Hart's remains were not found until 1991 and the cause of death was never determined. Prosecutors now say he had been stabbed.

Goff is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
