USDA Undersecretary for Food Safety Elisabeth Hagen announced several steps today that are designed to more rapidly respond to reports of food borne illnesses. One centers on a more rapid tracing back to the source of the food illness by the USDA.

They will also begin an investigation earlier and before there is confirmation contamination has occurred.

Part of the plan also involves requiring food plants to establish an action plan to notify the Fed within 24 hours of a suspect case of contamination.
